Besseggen Ridge (Norway)

Date: Aug. 11, 2023

Location: Jotunheimen National Park, Norway

Distance: 9 miles one way

Highest point: 5800 feet

Elevation gains: 3800 feet

This epic hike turned into an adventure after we literally “miss the boat”. The one way hike could start or end at the boat dock of Gjendensheim. I fatefully chose to start the hike there meaning we have to catch the last returning boat from Memurubu by 5pm.

Gjendemshiem is located in the remote Jotunheimen National Park about 3.5 hours from Olso. While it offers many outdoor activities, most people come here to hike the Besseggen ridge.

From the boat dock, the trail snaked uneventfully, except for intercepting a small herd of reindeer and offering ever improving lake view, uphill till the ridge is attained.

After about 3.5 mile and 2500 feet, the high point of trail was reached. From then on, the advertised vista started none-stop as the trail took its ungodly steep descent.

After reaching the thin bridge separating the 2 polychromic alpine lakes, the trail picks up steam again, undulates over several peaks and valleys adding significant climbing, before the final descent to the hamlet, Memurubu.

Memurubu is just below the final slope. I could see the last boat arrive and depart punctually at 4:55pm, but marooned at Memurubu turned out to be a pleasant experience. The hiking lodge had a room with 4 bunk beds plus warm, hearty meals for us. An uneventful boat ride next morning concluded this unforgettable adventure.
