Little Spokane River – Knothead Loop

Date: July 10th, 2016
Location: Little Spokane River Nature Reserve (Painted Rocks to Knothead Loop)
Distance: 7.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 1000 feet

Sunny with occasional clouds in low 70’s, we cannot ask for a better weather to hike this pleasant trail 10+ minutes from our house. Little Spokane river is very popular among kayakers. Jeannette has been on it twice, but we’ve never hiked this loop until today. The loop starts at Painted Rocks (Native American artifacts, above) parking lot, and we went counterclockwise.

First 1.5 mile was a gradual inclined dirt road flanked by forest and hills – remnant of 2015 fire above. The trail, very well signed (except see below), turned southward and started steeper climb toward the ridge. At 2 mile, we crest the ridge, and soon reached an obvious spur trail to the first view point.

The trail now going downhill reaching the second unsigned spur trail at 2.8 mile to the highlight of the loop – Knothead view points. Going uphill for about 0.4 mile, splendid views awaited us:

Returning to the main trail, we went downhill in earnest until trail flattened as it reached the banks of Little Spokane River where it meandered 1.7 mile back to Painted Rocks.
